The Summer We Forget to Check In With Ourselves
Summer often brings an expectation of happiness.
Social media fills with holidays, family gatherings, sunny walks, and smiling faces. There seems to be an unspoken belief that this is the season we should feel our best.
But the truth is, summer doesn't always feel light for everyone.
For many women, it can bring a different kind of pressure. The pressure to make memories, keep everyone happy, juggle childcare, social commitments, work, finances, and somehow still find time to look after ourselves.
In all of that, we can forget to ask one very important question:
How am I really doing?
Looking After Everyone Else
As women, many of us naturally find ourselves caring for others. We organise, support, encourage, and make sure everyone around us is okay.
But somewhere in the middle of meeting everyone else's needs, our own emotional wellbeing can quietly move to the bottom of the list.
Sometimes we become so used to coping that we stop noticing we're struggling.
We keep going because we feel we have to.
Summer Doesn't Erase Difficult Feelings
Brighter days don't automatically make grief disappear.
Sunshine doesn't remove anxiety.
A holiday doesn't always quieten a busy mind.
Mental health doesn't take a break simply because the season has changed.
It's okay if your summer doesn't look or feel like everyone else's.
It's okay if you're still carrying worries, navigating loss, or simply feeling emotionally tired.
Your experience is valid.
Checking In With Yourself
Checking in with yourself doesn't have to be complicated.
It can begin with a few gentle questions:
What do I need today?
What has been feeling heavy recently?
Have I been listening to my own needs as much as everyone else's?
What would help me feel more grounded this week?
These moments of reflection allow us to reconnect with ourselves before we become overwhelmed.
Permission to Slow Down
Not every sunny day has to be filled with plans.
Not every weekend has to be productive.
Not every invitation has to be accepted.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is sit in the garden with a cup of tea, take a walk without a destination, read a book, or simply enjoy a few moments of quiet.
Rest isn't something we have to earn.
It is something we need.
A Gentle Reminder
This August, while you're making memories with others, don't forget to make space for yourself too.
Take a moment to pause.
Take a breath.
Ask yourself how you're really feeling.
Because your wellbeing matters just as much as everyone else's.
The kindest relationship you'll ever build is the one you have with yourself.
And that's worth checking in on, whatever the season.
🌸 B.L.O.O.M Closing
At B.L.O.O.M by SMA, we believe wellbeing begins by making space for yourself. This August, amongst the sunshine, the plans, and the busy moments, don't forget to check in with the person who matters too - you.
